13 Super Spooky Halloween Hot Spots

Candy and costumes are good and fun, but this Halloween season in South Carolina, something wicked this way comes. Here are 13 haunted houses throughout the state that will stay with you long after you leave. October? More like Shocktober. It’ll be a bloody good time.

1. Kreepy Hollow, Bishopville

Kreepy Hollow’s three frightening attractions are creeping back once again. Give yourself at least an hour to make your way through the zombie breakout, a two-story haunted house and a macabre bus ride… that is, assuming you’re brave enough to make it through all three. Tickets are $20. If you’re really dying to get through the clown tunnel, see disfigured hillbillies and hop on a two mile hayride, you can purchase a fastpass for $35. The hollow opens at 7pm Thursday through Sunday in October. Parking is free and concessions are available.

2. Nightmare Dungeon, Greenville

An all new petrifying experience in a two-story farmhouse starts this year. You’ll feel like you’re living in a horror film with special effects, scary sets, dark tunnels and maze-like rooms. The Dungeon of Lost souls features a labyrinth of cells, drafty halls and human experiments gone horribly wrong. We hear local patients were once infected with a sadistic virus and tortured. The nightmare is open through November 3rd for $30 from 7pm until 2am.

3. Hall of Horrors, Columbia/Cayce

For 35 years, the oldest haunted house in the midlands has been serving up 3,000 square feet of pure mechanical mayhem. A dark house is filled with sinister costumed characters. In the dark corridors, you’ll find tangled spider webs, trap doors and severed hands dangling. Eerie wails and howls will keep you in constant fear of what

lies ahead. Be a part of the scare during the Zombie Survival experience where teams are strapped with foam dart guns and led into a maze that represents a dilapidated, post-apocalyptic community. The best part? No lines. Instead, guests are given numbers and can wait in the hospitality tent with free refreshments, games, horror movies and photo ops. Starting at 7:30pm, slots open every 15 minutes until 11:30pm for $10.

4. Deceased Farm, Lexington

At the Deceased Farm, two deadly attractions are combined to one self-guided haunt. Start with the 3-Deceased experience at this dark, desolate farm (3D glasses will be provided). Next, two acres of dark cornfields await. If you’re spine isn’t completely chilled, stick around for the zombie paintball shooting gallery, a coffin fire pit to roast s’mores, deceased brews and an escape room. Thursday through Sunday in October, ticket sales start at 7:30pm, closing at 10:30pm on Thursday and Sunday for $16 and 11:30pm Friday and Saturday for $20.

5. Field of Scream, Gaffney

This one’s not exactly a haunted house, but a corn field in the middle of nowhere after sundown? Sounds every bit as eerie. ThinkChildren of the Corn vibes. Family friendly by day but Friday and Saturday nights as well as Halloween, this grim corn maze is open from dark until 11pm. With twists and turns with monsters lurking around every corner, it is sure to be intense and well worth the drive.

6. Scream Acres Haunted House and Hayride, Bishopville

Nationally ranked as one of the top 25 haunted houses, Scream Acres is back for more and, as the name so aptly implies, get ready to scream. Scream Acres is open from 7pm until 1am every Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $15 and the proceeds are all donated to local charities. For the past 13 years, this haunt has kept patrons on their toes.

7. Zombie Outbreak Virtual Reality Zombie Shoot, Greenville

Feeling “been there, done that” about haunted houses this year? Try South Carolina’s first entirely virtual reality haunted attraction. This immersive VR “haunted house” puts you right in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. Strap into the VR headset, descend the elevator down into the compound and wake up in a world of the walking dead. For anyone 13 and older, it’s $20 cash at the door starting at dark.

8. Dark Castle, Elgin

10,000 square foot indoor haunt, outdoor attraction, zombie survival scenario, 3 haunts, 2 brisk breakouts (five minute escape rooms) and a smash room to take out your stress and anger? Go ahead and carve your headstone now. The Dungeon of Darkness (inside) and Dark Knight’s Terror Trail (outdoor) open at 7pm Friday and Saturday through November 3rd, plus some Thursdays and Halloween night. Make your way through an enormous warehouse, into the woods, into the action and (hopefully) find your way back. Tickets range $13-30 with the escape rooms adding $5-8.

9. Fear Farm Haunted House, Blacksburg

This Fear Farm is every nightmare you’ve ever had, your worst dream come true. With five different experiences, there is a little something for everyone. Enroll in the Ringmaster’s Circus Academy for a demented clown school education. A series of tight twists and turns in complete darkness of the pitch black caverns that make up the abandoned mine shafts in The Abyss. These bizarre stories, as well as three others will continue to haunt you long after you leave.Open every Friday and Saturday night plus a couple Sunday’s near Halloween from 7pm until after 11:30 pm, it’ll only cost you $20… hopefully.

10. Gilbert House of Terror, Gilbert

Get a good old fashioned scare at this classic walk-through haunted house. Starting Friday, October 12th, doors open at 7:30 pm and the ticket office closes at 11pm. For $15, your heart will pound through 13 rooms that are never the same. You only have eight nights for this fright. All the proceeds support local charities.

11. Wompus Woods Haunted Trail, Cowpens

According to legend, “Wompus” is a 12 foot beast roaming the South Carolina woods. This walking trail is designed around the folklore of the monster. For those of the faint of heart, there is a less scary family hayride. Tickets prices vary but you can save money and get both for $30 or bring a friend and buy two tickets for $50. Each takes about 30 minutes to experience. Doors open at dusk and close at 2 am on Friday and Saturday nights, 11pm on Sunday and Thursday nights.

12. Boone Hall Fright Nights, Charleston

Every October, Boone Hall Plantation turns into South carolina’s largest multi-attraction haunted house. This year taking the theme of a once peaceful farm turned into a feeding ground for supernatural evil and fear. Venture through the farmhouse, the clearing, the woods or the corn. Or, all four, if you dare. Open Thursday through Sunday starting at 7:15pm, individual tickets are $11-13, or purchase a ScreamPass to all four for $33.

13. Nightmare Haunted House, Myrtle Beach

Mysterious, dark, morbid. Just a few words to describe the weathered walls of Nightmare Haunted House. In and out of total darkness, shivering with terror at the twisted grunts and moans of the undead, stay alert as you can’t be sure what lurks in any direction. Open daily from noon until late for only $10, find out why the east coast’s scariest dark attraction declares “no wimps allowed.”
