Since many of us are working from home at the moment, it’s important to establish a routine in order to stay as productive and positive as possible.
First, you should pick a quiet place in your home that has a good internet connection. Try to sit at a table, counter or desk with your computer (it may be tempting to take your laptop into the bedroom, but resist!) Ensuring that you have an undisturbed place in your home that is allocated for work will help keep you focused and enable you to keep other distractions out of your space.
Even if you’re not interacting with someone via Skype or Zoom, try to change out of pajamas and put on comfortable clothes while you work. This is a very important part of establishing your routine and will keep you from wanting to lounge all day. Make sure that all of the technology, programs, and apps that you need for work are downloaded and up to date. That being said, try to put your phone on silent or out of reach if it’s not directly tied to your work to prevent mindless scrolling.
Finally, make the most of free time when you’re not working. Having clearly defined work hours and designated breaks will allow you to keep work and play separate. USA Today sums it up perfectly: “”Distractions are bad, but breaks are good. Take them, but then go back to work.” When you “clock out” for the day, make sure to strike a balance of productivity and relaxation. If you’re feeling inspired after that Zoom meeting, try a new recipe. If you’re worn out, settle onto the couch. With patience and a solid routine, you can easily get through working from home with your sanity intact.
